Big River Yoga is a local, independently owned yoga studio in the Seward neighborhood of Minneapolis. Our mission is to awaken the consciousness of people to realize our interconnection.

We offer a variety of yoga classes for beginners, continuing and advanced students in a variety of yoga traditions including hatha, vinyasa, yin, and restorative yoga. We also offer Thai massage training classes and a variety of workshops and special events. Health Coaching and Massage therapy complement our yoga offerings and we specialize in Thai massage. Our RTT (Registered Thai Therapist) and instructor, Chris Gordon, leads Thai massage trainings.

About Big River Yoga

Big River Yoga welcomes you. We strive to cultivate community by practicing yoga to remember and to celebrate our interconnection and the many gifts life has to offer. Yoga is a harnessing of energy through skillful action to align and integrate your body, mind and heart with consciousness, with love, with a “oneness” that emanates through everything. Our teachers have years of training and experience and we offer a variety of classes, including align and flow classes, vinyasa yoga, gentle yoga, restorative yoga, meditation classes and more. We humbly strive to share the deep and profound wisdom of yoga with you. All of our teachers are certified and registered with yoga alliance. Classes are taught with clear alignment instruction and encouragement to connect to your body, mind and heart. 


To support your wellness, we offer massage therapy, wellness coaching and a variety of wellness workshops. Our massage therapists specialize in Thai Massage, deep tissue massage and relaxing swedish massage. Rest on the Biomat as you receive your massage session. This special device emits Far Infrared Ray heat that penetrates and warms the body from the inside out. It is deeply relaxing and healing.


We have deep respect for the lineage of teachers and practitioners who have come before us, the people that taught them, and the cultures from which the practice comes. We are grateful this practice is available to us and we humbly pass the teaching on to our students. 

Chanting the Shanti Mantra
At the beginning of Chris Gordon's yoga classes we chant the Shanti mantra. The mantra establishes the yoga studio as a sacred space
of peace and learning and invites peace to rain down upon those who practice yoga here. Listen to the chant here

Om Saha naa vavatu
Saha nau bhunaktu
Saha viiryam karavaa vahai
Tejas vinaa vadhita mastu 
ma vidvishaa vahaihi
Om shanti shanti shanti

May we together be protected
May we together be nourished
May we work together with great energy
May our study together be brilliant and effective
May there be no disputes among us
Om peace, peace, peace.

Shanti is chanted three times at the end. The first shanti is for peace from personal suffering, such as our own physical and mental aches and pains. The second shanti is for peace from the suffering caused to us by other beings. The third shanti is for peace caused by universal events that affect us all, like weather and the environment. The three shantis also refer to physical, mental and spiritual peace.
